Personal Project;Initial Concepts to updated concepts.

Henry

Showing the progression of my skill at making skulls. No idea what i was thinking with the first one. I really like the mustache guy at the end though he looks like a cartoon of Yosemite SAM.

Some quick tests to see which colour worked better with the colour palette.  I feel the blue jacket works the beast out of this lot. The red one looks ok as well.

Decided that id try a  female version of my character.

A turnaround of Henry. I now realize that when modelling the character hes a bit bigger in the chest than i thought so the jacket will have to be tailored.

Just some more colour variations, I was originally going to use this in my pitch but i decided i wanted a more "john created" skeleton. So i set a pose with my skeleton edsign and traced over him.

I had a lot of fun making Henry pull faces.

I based my final design on a bunch of concepts that i did for Henrys head.  I really like the large cheekbones and extremely large eyes, gives him a lot of personality.

A couple of designs for the rib cage. I went for a mix between the two above.  Strong and thick with a bit of curve.I added in the scapula and collarbones.

Just placing the two colours i liked best on my jacket and after seeing them together i like the blue jacket, feels a bit more like a confederate soldier.

Beast

The beast was a lot harder to pin down a final design. I wanted a beast like figure made of shadow kind of like the Balrog of Morgoth from The Lord of The Rings The Fellowship of The Ring. I did want it to be physical wrapped up in shadow which would enimate from it.

I really like the design of Toothless, from the 2010 Movie How To Train Your Dragon.  Especially the tail design for him.
The Spines that protrude from the beast were originally going to use smoke attributes to give it that dark smokey feel.

I started off my 3D character with a basic dog downloaded from the Mudbox community library, from here I extruded the haunches giving him a more menacing feel and removed the adorable floppy dog ears.  I also elongated the tail and made the "whale tail".  I added spines to my character and added horns but felt this wasn't enough so a chain was added.

Just had a play with colours using some basic blinns, but doesnt seem to be quite the feel i was going for.

Below is a very first original concept for the beast.

Environment

Just some very quick box buildings done in Maya just so i could think about position and scale when completing the model and animatic sequence.

Here are a few rough designs of houses that i will be using fro the design of the set.  Each of these houses have been made with 'easablilty' in mind as i will have to model them physically so having a ridiculously detailed house is impracticable as i will be using found materials to build them.

Some quick concepts depicting what you could see down the alley, maybe some stalls, overhanging windows etc.

Quick gallows concept.

Some more house designs.

Some notes from my sketchbook.

On making the cobblestones and setting them up in the environment.

House making notes.
initial storyboards(thumbnails) of what would happen.
