Personal Project; Entry for the 3/09/2015

Just some more photos of what i got up to today in the basement.

So in no particular order- though i did try,
The Alley scene Set.

I undercoated the environment in black, this provides a nice dark area in case my measurements aren't up to snuff and have some gaps. The dark gaps that you can see are slots for the walls to go in. each wall is specifically made for a certain section of the model.  the middle is going to covered in small cobblestones that i have been making, but now i am considering maybe trying to find a faster way to do this as they are taking a very long time to make.
The walls of the city undercoated and ready for a final paint. I still need to chop out the rest of the windows and paint the back of them too. I am using a thick clear sheet of plastic for the windows which will be fitted and glued into place once the painting is done. curtains will also be place on the inside of the walls once everything has been painted.

Gallows Hill Set
Mainly worked on the last scene in my story, Gallows Hill where Henry meets his demise..... again.

I work pretty fast so if i jump round in explaining what I've done that's the reason.
I used some modelling flock and PVA glue to make some grassy patches on the model. Patches rather than a full grass area will make it look a bit more natural.

I painted the wooden sign for Gallows Hill. may redo this though as it seems a bit to clean..

Using some old paintbrushes, i chopped the bristles off them and used them for reeds and longer patches of grass in the scene.

Having some paint that had been hardened at the bottom of the bristles made them look more naturalistic as reeds are naturally darker closer to the earth.

The Gallows

The gallows had already been undercoated in a dark brown so all i had to do was add some darker tones in all the creases and joins, i used a runny black to do this so it stained the wood.

Just a couple of close ups which show the hangman's rope and dry brushing detail of the model. Copper and gold wire was used rather than actual rope because i thought it would hold its shape better.

I used a lighter brown to dry brush the entire gallows model. this helped pick out the edges of it and give it a more weathered look.  Using a wet dirty brush with darker browns and maybe some reds will also help to achieve the correct colour.

The gravestones

Originally i had thought of placing some gravestones in my scene and then discarded it. Later i realised i put a couple in anyway but they weren't that obvious as Sarah pointed out to me, so today i made them more obvious and made more of them.

Token use of own name in the set, here john lies....

A solitude angel watches over this grave..

The rounded headstones are made from Popsicle stick ends. Painted black and dry brushed grey.

I had a small figurine of a guy sitting down which i used in a couple of different sculptures in my previous years at sit. So i thought hey an angel.. i grabbed some thin card and cut out some rough wing shapes and glued them on his back ...

 and voila.. an angel.
I made a very quick stand for him and placed him over the grave. Just a quick dry brush with grey will turn him to stone.

The area that is black will be painted a muddy brown colour indicating that this is the earth in which some lost soul is buried.

The graveyard encircles the gallows and provides the area with character and narrative.

And now where i am at....

Painted the steps exactly like the gallows. I did use a bright copper colour on the chain rail which i dulled down with some silver.. still not entirely satisfied with this bit.

Here i added some fine gravel to the model using PVA, this will dry clear showing the painted model beneath any gaps.
Just need to paint a background....

and, and, and, and oh that's enough for one night.;)
