Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Games in Middle Earth

Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Games in Middle Earth

Years ago when i was thirteen or so sometime after the first Lord of The Rings movie was released I started collecting the Strategy battle games figurines. These little 28mm models took you through an easy step by step  process of assembling your figures (metal and resin) and painting them. It also had instructions on making dioramas and scenes for the figures which i found very useful and even used some of the skills in my Bachelor degree.

Over the years I "outgrew" them and gave quite a few to my nephews and sold some more; keeping only a handful left. A big regret now as they are worth quite a bit of money. Over the last year i have restarted collecting them and now have amassed quite a nice number of models.

I'm intending on building mainly a large Rohan army with Galadhriem elves (yes even though they're not in the book) on the good side and on the evil team Sarumans' army with dunlendings, wild men and the fearsome Uruk Hai. My goal is to create a fully painted helms deep scenario to use as  a model and stage scenarios for playing the battle game on.

Anyway so I'm fixing and repainting some of the armies I have as I brought a lot of them second hand and fixed their broken shields, swords pikes and even replaced their heads on a few.

I thought as I'm working with a new lot of paints called scale 75 that id start from the very beginning and paint the models in the same order that the books came out.

Consumed~ Map update part 2

Consumed~ Map update part 2

More map updates this time for the Continent known as Hilenia.

Armath is home to Emon Armath who is the brother to Cul Eithrainn and uncle of Cadan and Corrin.

D'Elanor is where Jessalyns and Aidens mother is originally from.

Map of Caltar showing Royal coat of arms for the different houses. There is currently a rebellion happening led by Aonghus Campbell of Redmont who is league with Cadan of Bruenore.

Fenleith is a tangle of swamps and fen-lands. Many do not even bother going to Fenleith and skirt around closer to the Monadhiliath Mountains.

Ardrossain is a busy port and is one of the largest ports in Hilenia. Though it doesn't have a standing army it has a loyal guard detachment from neighboring Eithrainn.

The Archipelagos of St Vincent is where the legendary St Vincent now resides. St Vincent traveled
all four corners of the world learning healing and alchemy.

Sunderland is a frozen area to the east of Bruen. It is home to the species of White Dragons that can be tamed as pack animals.White dragons have heat vision and huge dinner plate like feet to keep them aloft on the snowy ground. they have retractable claws in the bottoms of their hooves to help on difficult terrain.

The Drakon Realm is where the last of the largest troll population now live after being chased out of Eithrainn, Bruenore and Mercia.  The Eastern side of The Drakon realm is covered in many volcanoes most are dormant though the largest of these, Mount Terra is very much active.

Consumed Update~ Maps

Consumed Update~ Maps

Update for the maps of the world "Earth'. These are the countries and islands making up Kresh a large landmass in the North-Eastern part of my world.Though the story doesn't focus on them yet they play a larger role later on.

Hilenia was once a part of Alenia but broke apart millennia ago.

The Bemonem region in the center of Kresh is huge. Though it has no ruling lords it has barons who have strongholds dotted all over the lands. Pirates and militia groups are bountiful in the badlands and even attack the strongholds now and then.

The Presalon Republic is the most advanced country in my worlds despite not being the biggest territory.

The Stormlands get their name from the severity of the storms that constantly sweep the coast.

The Varaig Empire is similar to that of  Bemonem. Though they do not have barons or castles they live in nomadic camps and range across their territory like locusts. They are blood thirsty and eat the flesh of humans and animals alike. The borders between the Varaig Empire and Bemonem is littered with the carcasses of their dead.

Consumed: Aonghus Campbell update

Aonghus Campbell update

Update for the character Aonghus Campbell. Redmont rebel and traitor to his fathers reign. Stealing his father's prized heirloom claymore he has taken to slaving trolls and Zahl a new elf like race and is selling them in Bruenore and Mercia.

Aonghus is large for a human and has a very squat jaw. He also sports a tiny beard and often is accused of compensating for something due to his large size and huge sword.A running joke in the series. He is a good fighter and is simply arrogant and childlike in his manner, throwing tantrums over not getting his way.

Aonghus is shown here dressed in his clans colors. Clan Redmont a black buck on a  green and orange background horizontal. The clan is a minor one but holds significant land assets and holds a strategic location in the middle of Caltar.

Most of the Warriors and peoples of Caltar use axes and only claymores are given to those of Royal/Lords blood and its illegal to have one without a seal of identity on you. They also use lochaber axes to grapple opponents on horseback, throwing them off their horses or taking away shields for a well placed arrow to find its mark.

Consumed: Matoc and Malkas Design

Matoc and Malkas Design

Design for Matoc and Malkas two of the most renowned Roctrolls of the age. Roctrolls are cunning and can trace their heritage from ancestral lines dating back to the troll horde days.

Back view showing chicken wish bones in hair.
Matoc with claymore of Aonghus Campbell after he took it from him
.

Malkas is older and a lot gaunter than his son Matoc. Older trolls often have a smaller jaw line but they have longer although wispier hair.

Matoc has his wifes ring in his nose a red ruby on a plain golden band.

Consumed update maps.

Consumed update maps.

Update of maps so far. Still need to finalize a design i like best. added in the scale and moved some continents closer to match the story more.El Alkinder being the exception which I moved further away.

~Update

El Alkinder is now passed down as a legend rather than reality. This is because the place didn't really fit in with my story and while I liked some of the concepts and legends I feel that that is where it belongs. Its hard to make these decisions especially when you can see potential in them but maybe I could rewrite a spin off story about the giant inhabitants there who fought the great sea drakes of the North.

Update for Consumed project: Castle Eith

Update for Consumed project: Castle Eith

Castle Eith perches on a dark rock face which is slowly eroding into the sea. Part of the castle has already fallen into the sea.  It is the home to the Royal house Nevim Eithrainn; of Southern Bremmalas.

Here is a carved version of what the castle looks like. Hand carved from plaster. At the moment I've kept all the buildings simplified to make it easier to carve.

Overview of the training arena, looking towards the church, clergy buildings as well as the  commander barracks.
Overview, looking South over the front gates of the castle.

The 'fingerpointing' shape on the left is where the great hall, library and throne room are situated. I will be building this up with some more plaster before carving. The model was getting pretty thin already so instead of carving down more to fit it in i will build up and then trim back.

 The model so far.
Above: Showing the 'secret' entrance into the citadel. The Rock wall to the right is closest to the sea and is slowly slipping away into it.

Below: Just doing some very quick box placements based on my concepts before fleshing them out. this helps me get the size right and helps me to see if my concept would work.

Above: Quick concept for Castle Eith. the pic on far right was my original sketch but i found i was trying to hard giving them too much and that didn't work within the story, so i cut it down, made the castle smaller and now it works much better.

Consumed update people of the realms

Consumed update people of the realms

Aidan boar hunt small concept design.

Quick concept showing size of small boar and size of boar spear compared to character.

I still might do some more tweaks to aidans leather vest. add in some more details etc. I also need to decide on colors for the character. Little bit unsure how I want to display his dual swords, on his back, to the side or even both on one. But for now fairly happy with the character.

Silhouette of different characters, perhaps have a small animation or something hinting at what will be seen in the intro of each series.
