Pinnacles project part3

Pinnacles project part3

Started the painting. Will see how it looks during the day. Always good to have a rest and look at the work with fresh eyes.

Above: Still not too sure about the color of the sky? Will have another look tomorrow.
Below: The next day.

I repainted the sky to better resemble the image. Its still a little bit streaky for my liking but it seems a lot better to me.

Pinnacles project part2

Pinnacles project part2

The undercoats have all been done and now i will transfer the design onto the prepared wood with saral paper.

It took a little bit longer to undercoat as the paint was more watery than I thought. So I have been doing alternate coats of white and gesso with a light sanding in between each coat.

The work is a challenge for me because the board is a lot more square than I'd consider a landscape to be, this simply means that trying to visualize the perspective and get it right makes it that much harder. But i believe I'm up for the challenge. I used a found photograph of the area and using Photoshop split the photo into nine. Each square roughly represents an A4 piece of paper so that transferring makes it easier. Labeling these is also a help. This means that i can move the design up if i want to add more foreground or down to add more sky. I layed these down on the prepped board and using saral paper under the transfer paper drew down leaving the image onto the board.

Really hard to see but transferred the design by using tracing paper.

Above: Laying it on the board so i can see if i need to move the design up or down to add or decrease the level of foreground and sky.

Below: Splitting the photo up into roughly nine A4 pieces will make it easier when transferring and painting the design.

Above: Saral paper and stylus to transfer design.

Overdrew the design with a pencil so I could clearly see the image. I will most likely have to transfer the image again after each layer of sky is painted. I am now up to the painting stage so I will set up my go pro and record the painting process.

Pinnacles Project part 1

Pinnacles Project

I have been commissioned to paint/make a 3D work of original art that comes out of the wall much like I did for the Holdsworth bridge back in 2014. (see pics below)

PART 1:

Size of proposed project 60 x 74cm

I will be following much the same lines as the other work. Background first, then building out the foreground into the viewers space.

First I cut a 1200 x 600piece of MDF into the correct size.

Sanded corners and edges, and gave the surface a quick buff to remove any unwanted lumps.

I used some gesso primer (which is just a fancy word for undercoat) to give it a nice surface to paint on. This will also help the paint stick to the surface of the MDF.

I will give the surface(once dry) a light sand and repeat on both sides until I have a smooth completely white surface to begin transferring the design onto the work.
